Elisa Jenkins, Cape Breton's Round the World Sailor

Elisa JenkinsBorn on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Elisa grew up in Sydney River and graduated from Sydney Academy in 1997. Following high school, she studied Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, a career choice that has been rewarding on many levels.

Elisa got the sailing bug while in University, and over the past five years, sailing became a passion and represented a large portion of her thoughts and plans. Returning to Cape Breton after an extended period of South Pacific and Australian cruising, Elisa was inspired to pursue further sailing challenges.

In June, 2008, the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race made a stop in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Elisa decided the Clipper Round the World Race was something she wanted to do.  Now Elisa is a “round the world sailor” onboard the “Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia’s Masterpiece” with a goal of raising $1 for every mile she will travel in the 35,000 nautical mile race!

Support Elisa's Mile for Mile Campaign

On September 13, 2009, Elisa began her 35,000 mile round the world sailing adventure when the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race commenced from the Humber in the UK!  The goal of the Mile for Mile campaign is to raise $35,000 before Elisa returns to Cape Breton in July 2010 at which time funds raised will be presented to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation in support of the Cancer Centre expansion project.  Donate online here

When Elisa joined the Clipper she decided to raise money for the Cape Breton Cancer Centre in her race preparations and, as of June 2009, Elisa donated more than $5,000 to the expansion project.

Let’s keep Elisa’s fundraising momentum going.  Please consider sponsoring a mile or a few miles in the “Mile for Mile” campaign. Be part of this momentous occasion and help Elisa reach her goal of $35,000 for the Cape Breton Cancer Centre expansion project and for all Cape Bretoners who have been touched by cancer.

Cape Breton Cancer Centre

In 2008, the Cape Breton Cancer Centre celebrated its 10th anniversary.  Cape Bretoners are fortunate to have one of Nova Scotia’s only two cancer centres right here in Cape Breton. Our Cancer Centre treats people from all over the Island. It also serves as the treatment centre for residents of Antigonish, Guysborough and Pictou counties.

Our Cancer Centre has the unique distinction of being recognized – for the past three years – as the Number 1 Cancer Centre in Canada for patient satisfaction and level of care as ranked by a national survey.

Cancer Centre Expansion Project

Ten years of cancer care in Cape Breton has touched thousands of Cape Bretoners, but aging equipment needs to be updated. New technology means better care. A new Linear Accelerator and CT Simulator are urgently needed, as well as a building expansion to house this new equipment.  Further, to ensure the best cancer possible in Cape Breton, new diagnostic and surgical equipment is also required.

Fundraising Goal: $2M for the Cancer Centre Expansion Project

Monies raised through the Mile for Mile campaign will go directly towards this fundraising goal. Note: The Province of Nova Scotia has committed to this project with the condition that the community must raise $2M as its contribution towards the total $7.75M investment required.
