On Thursday, September 10, 2009, just days before the official start of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race, Cape Breton held a business reception in Hull, UK. The reception was held at the Ferens Art Gallery, a fitting venue given our yacht is named the “CAPE BRETON ISLAND, Nova Scotia’s Masterpiece”. Approximately 72 guests plus our Cape Breton contingent were in attendance from key market sectors including ports and logistics, regeneration and development, renewables, chemicals, tourism, seafood, investors, and included representatives from municipal government and a local MP, the chamber of commerce, local community economic development agencies, other yacht sponsors, and the media.
As a result, we were successful in putting Cape Breton Island on the world map for those in attendance at the reception, and established initial contacts in the region in all areas identified as having opportunity for Cape Breton Island. In keeping with our marketing strategy which recommends bringing Cape Breton culture to the ports we visit, Cape Breton musicians, Dawn and Margie Beaton, joined us to play fiddle and piano and teach step dancing steps to Cape Breton Island Crew members and others in attendance at event.
Over the course of the Race Start weekend, approximately 100,000 – 150,000 people had a chance to see our magnificently branded yacht and hear our Clipper song especially written for our yacht by local Cape Breton musician, Bobby Currie, broadcast across the waterfront!
